The console lid hinge on the NB1 breaks. Not occasionally — universally. It is one of those failures so consistent across a model that owners stop treating it as a fault and start treating it as a stage the car goes through.
The hinge is a small moulded pivot carrying the whole lid, and it is loaded every single time the console is opened. Mazda supplied it as part of the lid, so a broken hinge has always meant buying considerably more plastic than the failure warranted.
Fitment: NB1, 1999–2000. The console was revised for the NB2 in 2001 and the hinge geometry changed with it, so check your year carefully — this is one where a close-enough part will not close properly.
