The sliders that direct airflow on the dash vents of GMT800-era GM trucks. They go brittle, then they snap off in your fingers the first cold morning you try to redirect the heat.
What makes this one notable is the market that grew up around it. The failure is so consistent across Tahoe, Silverado and Sierra of this generation that 3D-printed replacements are now sold as ordinary retail products — the aftermarket has effectively taken the part over, because GM’s answer involves the vent assembly rather than the slider.
The plastic is thin at the pivot by design, since it has to flex to move. Twenty-plus years of Texas summers and Michigan winters does the rest.
