Matching Faded Interior Trim: Colour, Texture and Finish

You can produce a part that fits flawlessly and it will still look wrong if the colour and surface don’t match what’s around it. On interior trim this is often the harder half of the job, because you’re not matching the factory specification — you’re matching thirty years of sunlight.

Why “factory colour” is usually the wrong target

The intuitive approach is to reproduce the original colour code. In practice that produces a part that’s noticeably too dark and too saturated against its surroundings.

Everything around it has faded. The dashboard, the pillars, the console — all of it has drifted from where it started, and drifted unevenly depending on how much direct sun each surface caught. The top of a dashboard can be visibly lighter than the vertical face below it on the same moulding.

So the real target isn’t the original colour. It’s the current colour of the specific surfaces adjacent to where the new part sits.

How the fade actually goes

Interior plastics don’t just get lighter. They shift in fairly predictable directions:

  • Greys drift warm. A cool factory grey tends toward beige or brown as the pigment breaks down. This is the most common and the most frustrating, because a new cool-grey part against warm-drifted grey trim reads as obviously blue by contrast.
  • Blacks go grey and chalky. Carbon black is quite UV-stable, so true blacks hold better than most — but the surface still degrades and loses depth.
  • Tans and beiges yellow. Often the most dramatic shift of the lot.
  • Reds and blues lose saturation fastest. Organic pigments in these ranges are the least UV-stable.

Gloss level changes too, and independently. A surface that left the factory as a low-sheen satin degrades into something flatter and slightly rough. Matching colour but not sheen still reads as wrong, because the part catches light differently from everything near it.

Texture is the detail people forget

Almost no interior plastic is smooth. Factory mouldings carry a grain — a fine leather-look pattern, a pebble texture, a directional brush — that was etched into the mould tool.

A smooth reproduction next to grained trim stands out immediately, even at a perfect colour match, because the two surfaces scatter light completely differently. The smooth part looks glossier and more plastic regardless of what colour it is.

Reproducing grain is possible but genuinely hard. Fine factory textures sit near or below the resolution limit of the printing process, and printing at an angle that captures texture well may be the wrong orientation for strength. It’s one of the real constraints of the medium, and we’d rather say so than pretend otherwise.

The practical routes to a match

Print in a close base colour and leave it

Fastest and cheapest. Works well for parts that sit in shadow, in a footwell, or behind something — anywhere the eye isn’t drawing a direct comparison with adjacent trim. For a highly visible dash bezel, it’s rarely good enough on its own.

Dye

Fabric dye works on some polymers and penetrates rather than coating, which means the colour doesn’t chip or wear off at edges. It only goes darker, never lighter, so you need to start with a lighter base. Results vary considerably by material, and it’s worth testing on a scrap piece before committing.

Paint with an interior trim product

This is the route that gets the best results for visible parts, and the products designed for automotive interiors are genuinely good now. They’re formulated to stay flexible, and available in a range of sheens.

The process that actually works:

  • Clean thoroughly — degrease properly, since printed parts pick up oils from handling
  • Scuff-sand lightly to give the coating mechanical key
  • Use an adhesion promoter, which matters more on printed plastics than moulded ones
  • Build up in several light coats rather than one heavy one
  • Finish with a separate matte or satin clear to dial in sheen independently of colour
  • Let it cure fully — usually longer than the can suggests — before installing

The last two steps are what separate a professional result from an obvious repaint. Controlling sheen separately from colour is the single biggest lever.

Texture spray under colour

For grained surroundings, a textured basecoat before colour can approximate factory grain surprisingly well. It won’t fool close inspection, but at arm’s length in a car interior it closes most of the gap. Test on scrap first — texture products vary a lot in coarseness.

Getting the colour reference right

A few things that make a real difference:

  • Match in daylight, not under shop lighting. Two samples that match under fluorescent light can diverge visibly in sun — metamerism is real and it will catch you out.
  • Match against the actual adjacent surface, not a hidden area that never saw sun. The hidden area is closer to factory colour, which is exactly what you don’t want.
  • Check at the angle you’ll actually see it. Sitting in the driver’s seat, not standing over the part on a bench.
  • Take a removable donor sample if you can — a trim clip cover or a small removable piece from the same panel — to hold against test swatches.

The deliberate alternative: don’t match

Worth mentioning because it’s a legitimate choice rather than a compromise. Some builds go the other way entirely and treat the replacement as a deliberate accent — a satin black bezel in a grey interior, or a colour that picks up something else in the car.

If a genuine period-correct match isn’t achievable on a particular part, an obviously intentional contrast often looks considerably better than a near-miss. Near-misses read as mistakes; deliberate choices don’t.
