When a part is discontinued, restorers usually face a choice between a used original from a junkyard or a 3D-printed reproduction. Both have their place — here’s how to decide.
Junkyard originals
A used OEM part is genuine and often cheap, but it’s the same age as the one that failed. For interior trim, that means it’s likely just as brittle, faded, or cracked. You may also spend weeks searching for a specific part in usable condition.
3D-printed reproductions
A reprint is new material, made to order, in a plastic often more durable than the original. It won’t carry a factory part number, but for trim pieces, clips, and vents that nobody makes anymore, it’s frequently the only way to get a fresh, functional part.
Our take
Use originals where condition and authenticity matter and good ones exist. For sun-baked interior parts that are always deteriorated, a fresh reprint usually wins. Not sure about your part? Ask us.
